- -, Biblical-studies@yahoogroups.com, [], 1 Jul 2005 - Jim West ; there's an interesting emendation in BHS at this verse which suggests rearranging לשם to שלם which, truth told, makes MUCH more sense than the reading at present. Eichrodt bases his commentary on this verse on this reconstruction. What think ye?
-Tyler Williams; The metathesis is surely possible, though the MT as it stands also makes sense, e.g., "a planting of renown" (NJPS) or more idiomatically "a land renowned for its crops" (NIV). Dahood argues that the lamed ? is an "emphatic lamed" (CBQ 37 [1975] 341-341).
The fact that the LXX evidently had שלם in its Vorlage and translated it as φυτὸν εἰρήνης would be in favour of the emendation. I'm not sure how one could ultimately adjudicate between the two possible readings.
